I find myself answering a lot of IDKs lately. IDK, for anyone who isn’t familiar with the internet, it stands for I Don’t Know. The IDKs have been a commonly used answer for a lot of questions. They usually range from “Are you going to update your blog?”, “When are you going to find a better job?” to “When can I see some of your writing?” and “Why are you still in New Jersey?”

And of course, my answer consists of the usual: “I…don’t…know.” Not “sooner or later”, just “I don’t know.”

The IDK answer is most likely due to a lack of motivation and some other issues that I’ve been dealing with for some time. Normally I’d spend an entire day reading, writing, or both; now I just let it all get pushed aside as I deal with more course work (for another degree) and more of the usual stressors of daily life.

“What’s life?”
“A magazine?”
“What’s it cost?”
“Ten cents.”
“That’s cheap.”
“That’s life.”

Two years ago, I watched as two actors—actually, two students portraying a husband and wife—bantered with one another for a few seconds more until they started to reminisce about the simple things they used to do; like watch the picture perfect waves of the ocean or play a weird game of charades. I remember feeling slightly bored when the entire scene had finished…it wasn’t just the acting, but the almost 30-second banter that started and ended with “What’s life?”

Now, two years later, I’m starting to ask myself the same thing: What is life?

Well, ”Life” is not a ten cent magazine (not anymore I guess), and it’s not exactly a box of chocolates either. Or a bowl of cherries, in case I want to go back a few decades. To be honest, I really don’t know what “life” is. In a way (or my own opinion), life is a mixture of things. Right now, my “life” consists of a few things:

1) Finding a decent, non-tedious job that doesn’t involve Quickbooks.

2)Figuring out how to keep my blog updated (and readable.)

3) Wondering if it really pays to enroll in a so-called “communiversity” just to see if I can actually maintain a B.A. in English. (www.njcommuniversity.org)

4) Working on a way to get everything in order after an emotionally rough summer.

That’s what my “life” is right now. It doesn’t involve hanging out with friends until 3am or going shopping every single day or sleeping in until noon (even though it sounds tempting). It involves those four things that I haven’t been able to accomplish as of right now. Because my life right now is…still a work in progress.

A poem from long ago

When it comes to poetry, I’m terrible at it. I enrolled in a writing class about five years ago only to find out that the class revolved around poetry and nothing else. Fifteen weeks later, I passed with a C grade and a few of my poems received a few mixed reviews from a few peers and my professor, who also happened to be a writer.

Here’s an example of one of my poems I wrote (or typed on my own) that I thought was decent, but nothing special.

As I lay on my back and stare up at the sky,
Looking at it makes me want to sigh.
It’s blue and empty, not a cloud passing by
And I start to wonder how I’ll live my life.

Would I write music? A song or a lyric?
Or would I observe a few photographs,
so that I can look back at my past and laugh?

These are just thoughts that bug me from time to time,
The hardest part of it all is having to pick a job or a place where I can relax and feel fine.

I sit up from the ground and begin to look around
Everything is the same, but not as profound.
For now, I choose to write
And I’m hoping that something will eventually pop up,
something from my mind.

So for next Christmas…

So now that I’m done posting my introduction (with a little help from my cousin), I felt like posting another (random) blog since it seems to be semi-snowing on my end and I also felt like taking a short break from constantly studying my math notes. It doesn’t consist of the easy stuff (i.e. dividing and multiplying ’x & y’); but the material in my class, “Math for Liberal Arts”, consists of mindless problems like adding 100 squared and 300 squared and translating 2012 into Roman numerals. I also have to translate the numbers into Babylonian, Egyptian and Mayan symbols.

So…2012 in Roman numerals (I think) is MMXI (1000+1000+10+2).
Egyptian has a bunch of symbols that I can’t seem to locate on my laptop keyboard, so it would translate into two “lotus flowers” (or a weird looking tomato plant with a crescent shape), one “heel bone” and two “staffs”. Babylonian translates into something completely different, but I would probably have to use multiplication and draw this symbol (<) on a piece of paper along with a bunch of dark “v”s that look like stakes. Mayan is a long one and I’m too lazy to get into it.

I’m still wondering why the heck it’s necessary for a non-math major like me to take a stupid, tedious, and complicated math course like that? I’ve asked (more like constantly begged) my grade advisor if there’s a way to substitute math for another full credit course like computer sciences; but of course I got a “no” answer. All because the “college level” math course is a requierment and also a “state law” in New Jersey.

Can anyone (who happens to be anti-math) say “ridiculous”?
